History
The history of the Red Cross starts in 1885 when Dr. George Sterling Ryerson made the foundations of the Canadian Red Cross Society when he sewed two strips of red fabric onto a piece of white cotton and draped it over horse-drawn wagons that were transporting injured men. It wasn't until 1896 that he officially founded the Canadian Red Cross, which was the first overseas branch of the British Red Cross to become established. On May 19, 1909, the Canadian Red Cross Society Act was approved by Parliament, and decreed that the Canadian Red Cross would serve as an auxiliary to the Government of Canada for Canadians. The Canadian Red Cross became an independent charity organization and no longer a branch of the British Red Cross. In the century that has passed, the Canadian Red Cross has supported federal, provincial, municipal and territorial governments in their efforts to help people who have been impacted by adversity.
